Swan Class Plans

Swan Class Body Plan
Swan Class Mast and Spars
This set of plans has been drawn up expressly for modelmakers who wish to build a fully framed model. Drawn at the classic scale of 1:48, the set consists of a Mylar sheet with a sheer and profile, half-breadth and body plan. Accompanying this sheet is a CD-ROM containing patterns for all the floor, futtocks, toptimbers, hawse timbers and transoms. These patterns can be printed out on standard letter sized sheets as needed, using your own printer.

With this set, plus copies of contemporary plans of a Swan class ship-rigged sloop from the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, with care and patience the builder can produce a model like the one shown here.

The assistance of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, is gratefully acknowledged.

As an adjunct, there is complete information on the hulls and fittings of 18th century ship sloops in David Antscherl's two-volume set, The Fully Framed Model, HMN Swan Class Sloops, 1767-1780, published by SeaWatch Books.

Echo Class Plans

Echo Stern
This second set of plans has been drawn up expressly for modelmakers wishing to build a fully framed model of one of the first Royal Navy ship-rigged sloops to be specifically armed with carronades. The hull form and decorations are a shameless copy of a French design, contrasting with the similar sized Swan class.

Drawn at the classic scale of 1:48, the set consists of a Mylar sheet with a sheer and profile, half-breadth and body plan. Accompanying this sheet is a CD-ROM containing patterns for all the floor, futtocks, toptimbers, hawse timbers and transoms. Patterns can be printed out on standard letter sized sheets as needed, using your own printer.

Also, background information on each ship in this class is provided, with a list of available contemporary plans at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.

The assistance of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, is gratefully acknowledged.

With this set, in combination with copies of contemporary plans of an Echo class ship from the NMM, with care and patience the builder can produce a model similar to one shown here.

L-shaped door hinges, monograms for cannon and draught marks, all at 1:48 scale, are among the items found on these exquisitely etched sheets.
